Firefighters complete follow-up work in the Hortobágy National Park

Local News

Firefighters have completed follow-up operations in the outskirts of Egyek, in the Hortobágy National Park, where a reed, shrub and scrubland area caught fire on Tuesday, the disaster management authority reported Thursday morning.

The fire broke out on Tuesday, and operations were suspended after dark. Firefighters resumed work on Wednesday morning in the area between Egyek and Hortobágy.

By late Wednesday evening, the hotspots appeared to have been extinguished, but a storm reignited the flames. Firefighters continued working with water jets, hand tools and backpack sprayers, while the fragmented terrain made their work more difficult.

The fire was extinguished and the follow-up operations completed by early Thursday morning.

According to current estimates, approximately 80 hectares of land were burned.
