The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has brought charges against two defendants for property damage after they allegedly set fire to a man’s car in a parking lot in Debrecen.

According to the indictment, the adult female defendant and the victim were in a relationship at the time of the crime, but they had an argument, prompting the woman to decide to take revenge on the man. On the evening of November 16, 2024, the victim drove from his home to Debrecen to go out. After learning this, his girlfriend also travelled to the city, where she met her juvenile co-defendant later that evening.

The adult defendant told her juvenile accomplice what she was planning to do. They then took a taxi to a petrol station, where they purchased half a litre of petrol. They subsequently located the victim’s vehicle. In the early hours of November 17, 2024, the victim’s girlfriend poured the petrol over the roof of the car and set it alight with a lighter. Meanwhile, her juvenile accomplice walked around near the vehicle and kept watch to see whether anyone was approaching.

The flames from the car spread to two vehicles parked next to it, damaging them as well. One sustained damage of nearly HUF 80,000, the second HUF 460,000, while the victim’s vehicle suffered damage amounting to HUF 1.27 million. However, the defendants’ actions did not create a danger to the public.

During the investigation, the adult defendant reimbursed one of the victims for the smallest amount of damage, approximately HUF 80,000.

The Debrecen District Prosecutor’s Office has charged the adult defendant as the perpetrator and the juvenile defendant as an accomplice with causing substantial property damage and two counts of minor property damage before the Debrecen District Court.

In its indictment seeking a criminal order, the district prosecutor’s office requested that the court impose a suspended prison sentence on the adult defendant and community service on the juvenile defendant without holding a trial, based on the contents of the case file. It also requested that one victim’s civil claim, submitted during the investigation, be referred to other lawful proceedings.
