The Debrecen Court of Appeal has sentenced a man to 14 years in prison for the murder of his wife, who was unable to defend herself at the time of the crime. The court upheld the sentence handed down by the Szeged Court in May 2025, the court’s press secretary said on Tuesday.
Ildikó Fórizs added that the defendant will not be eligible for parole.
According to the facts established by the court, the defendant, who had previously worked as a military prosecutor, had been married to the victim since 2019. Their relationship began to deteriorate before the birth of their child, and their arguments became increasingly frequent in 2022.
In November 2022, the defendant was staying in Szeged with his wife and their child when they had an argument about their relationship in the early hours of the night. After the argument, the woman went to bed in the bedroom and fell asleep.
Shortly after midnight, the man knelt on his sleeping wife’s body, grabbed her neck with both hands and squeezed it until she died at the scene. Their child was sleeping in another room of the apartment at the time and did not witness the crime, the court stated.
