From 1 January, smoking in the bus stops, platforms, playgrounds, restaurants and bars is prohibited. Anyone caught smoking may pay a fine of up to 50.000 forints. The grace period lasts for 3 months during which time the authorities will only warn smokers.Smokers are in a tight situation. From now on, it is forbidden by law the smoke in closed places, in some institutions, even outdoors. Also, within a 5-meter radius from platforms, bus stops and playgrounds. Restaurateurs hope that the Western example will have a lasting influence and that the number of non-smoking guests will increase. And the authorities, that a grace period of 3 months will be enough for smokers to get used to the new system.
