At the general meeting held on 11 April, 2012 recognitions were handed over to members of the representative body of Debrecen on the occasion of the Város Napja (“City Day”).
An important stage of the development of Debrecen was the charter given by King Louis the Great in 1361, which elevated Debrecen into the group of privileged market-towns. Debrecen celebrates another important event on City Day: in 11 April, 1693 Leopold I gave a charter to Debrecen that elevated the city to the rank of a royal free town.
At the festive general meeting, two professors of the University of Debrecen, László Fésüs and József Pálinkás received the title of honorary citizen and Professor emeritus Zoltán Újváry was handed over the Pro-Urbe Award.
