The smuggler left behind his vehicle and 65 thousand packages of smuggled cigarettes when escaping from the finance officers in Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county last week.
The employees of the National Tax and Customs Administration Office tried to stop a pickup truck with Hungarian number plate in the area of Csaroda. However, the Peugeot Boxer did not stop, but drove away at a high speed. The officers began to follow the vehicle and the managed to catch up with it after a few kilometers. The Peugeot was already left on the verge of the road, and the driver escaped in the darkness. The officers opened the truck and found the cigarettes in black plastic bags.
The vehicle and the cigarettes, whose value is about 50 million forints, were detained and proceedings were initiated for the violation of law by unknown perpetrator.
