Advent marks the start of the Christian year; it is the four weeks before Christmas, this year it begins on 30 November.
The word Advent comes from the Latin ‘adventus’ which means ‘arrival’ or ‘coming’. This is the time for Christians to prepare for celebration of the birth of Jesus and look forward to the time that Jesus will come again.
The four Advent Candles stand for Hope, Peace, Love and Joy.
The first candle was lit by László Papp, mayor of Debrecen, Gusztáv Bölcskei, current clerical president of the Synod of the Reformed Church in Hungary and bishop of Debrecen, Nándor Bosák, Roman Catholic bishop of the county and Fülöp Kocsis, Greek Catholic bishop of the county this evening on Kossuth Tér.
