The Goethe Institute located in Budapest would prefer to have even closer connections than the already impressive ones it has built over the years with the University of Debrecen,” said the head of the institute on the occasion of his introductory official visit to Debrecen.
Michael Müller-Verweyen has been the director of the Goethe Institute in Hungary since last October, and he was invited for the first time to visit the Institute of German Studies at the University of Debrecen on Thursday as the new representative of the worldwide cultural organization of the Federal Republic of Germany, attending the series of events called Debreceni Német Kulturális Fórum [Debrecen’s German Cultural Forum].
The program of the series of events covers a one-week period, and Michael Müller-Verweyent came to participate in it together with Márta Nagy, Head of the Cultural Department of the institute and President of Magyar Goethe Társaság [Hungarian Goethe Society]. They were officially received by Elek Bartha, Vice-Rector for Educational Affairs, whereupon Professor Bartha informed them about the international relations of our university, with special emphasis on cooperation with academic and educational institutions in German-speaking countries, and further possibilities for expanding the currently existing connections, which the members of the delegation were interested to learn about.
“This is my first time in Debrecen, and I have been deeply impressed by what I have seen at the university. The building is beautiful, and the complex program and the individual academic activities pursued at the Institute of German Studies are also noteworthy regarding their relevance to countries where German is the official language,” said Michael Müller-Verweyen.
Debrecen’s German Cultural Forum is an official partner of Hungary’s Goethe Institute as its cultural society. As such, it operates a language exam center at the University Debrecen and provides support for implementing a variety of cultural events. In order to further popularize the German language, Goethe Institute considers the foundation of a scholarship fund for teachers of German as of 2017, in which our university may also be involved as a partner.
