Global

58 years ago, on the 9th of May, 1960, the use of the first contraceptive pills – called Enovid – was officially approved. In 1958, FDA (Food and Drug Administration) in the United States of America accepted the first contraceptive tablets and entered them into the pharmacy record. The tablets were developed in the 1950s by Gregory Pincus and John Rock.

It was the first contraceptive pill that contained estrogen (mestranol) and progesterone (norethisterone) hormones, thus preventing ovulation.

Today, Enovid pills cannot be purchased, but there are a number of other more modern hormone-based contraceptive pills and methods that are available to prevent non-desired pregnancy.
