The European Food Safety Authority reported on Tuesday (3rd of July) that they had found the source of a food poisoning that has been going on in five countries since 2015.The infection – caused by the listeria monocytogenes bacterium – affected 47 people between June 2015 and June 2018 in five different countries. Nine of the affected people died because of the infection. The countries concerned are Austria, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and the United Kingdom. The typical symptoms of the infection are fever, vomiting, diarrhea and headache.
The European Food Safety Authority has already discovered in March, 2018 that the source of the infection is a type of frozen corn. On Tuesday, however, it was reported that the frozen corn carrying the listeria monocytogenes bacterium comes from a Hungarian company: the contamination occurred at a firm called Greenyard. The company is located in Baja, Hungary.
The National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) announced that all frozen vegetables and mixtures of vegetables, that were produced between August 2016 and June 2018, would be recalled. They added that the company concerned had notified its partners and that the withdrawal of various products from the market has begun all over Europe.
The company’s frozen products were also recalled from Hungarian grocery stores.
Greenyard has said that among the recalled products there is not only frozen corn, but also frozen peas, beans and spinach, although not all of them are infected. They also added that the Baja plant was shut down and the reviews its operation has begun.
