Wetland Beauty at the Debrecen zoo

Local News

Iris pseudacorus is a beautiful perennial plant endemic to the Central Hungarian region of Jászság. Blooming magnificently from late spring to early summer, it has dark-green sword-shaped leaves and yellow or, occasionally, white flowers.

It is found near water, in swamps, on floodplains, and on waterlogged land. It used to be a medicinal herb as you could make a laxative from its roots, which also served as a material for black paint when mixed with iron sulfate.
