Native to a vast region ranging from the Mediterranean all the way to Central Asia, the vitex (Vitex agnus-castus), or chaste tree, is a deciduous bushy or semi-bushy species belonging to the sage family.
It has spear-shaped leaves with a rather pleasant scent and a mosquito-repellant effect and aromatic purple or light lavender flowers growing in panicles 10 to 15 cm long, blooming from July to late September, attracting bees and butterflies in droves. Drought tolerant to a medium degree, the vitex prefers sunlit spots. The extract made of its berries has medical, among others, gynecologic, uses.
Come and check out our aromatic purple-clad beauties in the Africa Aviary or by the Goose Pond.
