Conservation Status in Pixels

Culture Local News

World Wildlife Fund’s powerful 2008 campaign titled WWF Japan – Population by Pixel has recently been rekindled by an Imgur user named JJSmooth44, who has created 22 pictures consisting of as many pixels as there are remaining wild individuals of each respective threatened species – a shocking illustration of their gradual disappearance.

This new series includes several big cats such as the Amur tiger or the Amur leopard, kept at our institution under European Endangered Species Programs (EAZA EEPs). The photos clearly show that both cats have a precarious conservation status; modern zoos, however can, and do, play a key role in saving endangered species through ex situ husbandry. We are proud to look back on the past couple of years’ breeding successes with both felid subspecies.
