The Budapest chief prosecutor has charged 14 people who, for several months, allegedly smuggled illegal immigrants from Romania to western Europe via Hungary.
According to a statement by the prosecutor’s office, a 46-year-old Jordanian and a 48-year-old Slovak national who had been living in Hungary for years ran a criminal organisation between October 2017 and March 2018, allegedly smuggling illegal migrants from outside the European Union from Romania to western Europe via Hungary. The two men hired drivers and other workers whom they tasked with hiding the mainly Iraqi and Iranian migrants until they could be moved to their next destination. The Budapest chief prosecutor is seeking prison sentences, expulsion, fines and bans from participating in public affairs for the defendants.
