National

Jobbik has initiated the reduction of the voting age to sixteen, György Szilágyi, the party’s vice-president, spokesman and Member of Parliament, announced at his online press conference on Monday.

He said they had submitted their proposal to amend the constitution so that by 2022, young people would be able to vote in accordance with these rules.

He argued that in 2022 “we can define the future of Hungary for long years and decades, which is why it is important that this choice be made as clearly and as widely as possible”.

Today’s 16-year-olds are already young adults, an opposition politician said, saying that this age group has a lot of knowledge and can make responsible decisions and that they need to have a say in shaping the future.

According to György Szilágyi, having this opportunity, young people would imagine having a better future in Hungary rather than abroad.
