The Szarvas District Prosecutor’s Office indicted seven men from Borsod with a criminal record for looting, theft and attempted robbery.
The criminal gang robbed 29 elderly people across the country by saying that they were representatives of public utility service providers, the Békés County Attorney General’s Office informed MTI on Tuesday. Between April 2018 and February 2020, men between the ages of 24 and 51 were stealing from houses in several settlements in Csongrád-Csanád, Pest, Békés, Komárom-Esztergom, Győr-Moson-Sopron, Bács-Kiskun, Nógrád and Hajdú-Bihar counties, far from their place of residence.
In most of the cases they said that they were employees of public utility service providers, and typically referred to an overpayment of HuF 11,000 to force lonely, sick, elderly victims – between the ages of 76 and 91 – to give their money to them.
The crimes were committed by 2-4 gang members, and it was discussed who the driver was, who the watcher was and who would go in to the victim. After noticing the location of the elderly people’s money, one of the perpetrators diverted the pensioner’s attention, while his companion took the money. There were places where a few thousands forints, but also a place where two million were stolen. Gold jewelry was also taken away by the thieves.
The prosecutor has proposed that the perpetrators be sentenced to prison – says the statement.
