Culture Local News

At the beginning of the year, the Cívisváros institution reported the birth of new little animals every week. This time, they can provide good news from around the gray cattle house after one of their cows gave birth to a healthy offspring on January 19 after about nine and a half months of pregnancy. The little bull calf is discovering his surroundings with increasing curiosity, but he still spends a lot of time relaxing with his mother’s care. Interestingly, unlike their breed name, gray cattle calves come into the world with reddish fur and change to their well-known color by the age of a few months. The institution is confident that visitors will be able to admire the new resident even in this reddish state after reopening.

One of the main goals of the Debrecen Zoo is the preservation of native animal species and breeds, and in this respect, they take care of the Hungarian gray cattle, which -with its unmistakable appearance and many centuries of history- is one of the main features of the Great Plain and long economic and cultural values.
