Defence Minister Tibor Benkő laid a wreath at the memorial of Hungarian heroes on Sunday.

The minister noted that the last Sunday in May was declared the memorial day of Hungarian heroes in 2001, to mark the sacrifice of Hungarian troops in the first world war, but also “of all those who risked or sacrificed their lives and of those working for Hungarians and Hungary.” Therefore, the day is also dedicated to those who do the same in the pandemic situation, he said. The event was held at the Memorial Stone of Hungarian Heroes in Budapest’s Heroes’ Square, which was inaugurated in 1929. Later on Sunday, Benkő inaugurated the recently renovated Heroes’s Plot in the Fiume Road cemetery. Former Prime Minister Péter Boross and other dignitaries also attended the event.
