Hungary welcomes Romania’s recent accomplishments in the protection of the environment, Péter Szijjártó, the minister of foreign affairs and trade, said after meeting Barna Tánczos, Romania’s minister for environmental protection, water management and forestry, on Thursday.
The more effective Romania’s environmental protection efforts are, the better it is for Hungary, Szijjártó said on Facebook. The plastic pollution of the River Tisza is a recurring problem, he said, welcoming a new Romanian bill on a deposit return scheme for plastic bottles.
He also welcomed Romania’s decision to increase capacities for cleaning up water left from mining operations. Szijjártó said the two countries were set to draw up new measures aimed protecting their shared rivers at a meeting of the Romanian-Hungarian mixed committee for environmental protection and water management scheduled for the second half of the year.
The minister said Hungary and Romania had a shared interest in ensuring that European Union regulations did not discriminate against the use of natural gas and nuclear energy.
Minister of Agriculture István Nagy held an introductory meeting with Tánczos, recently and discussed opportunities for deepening water management and environmental protection cooperation between Hungary and Romania. Plans are also afoot to reconvene the Romanian-Hungarian mixed committee for environmental protection. The two ministers were in agreement that the upcoming Hungarian presidency of the Visegrad Group provided an opportunity for a stronger representation of regional interests in the European Union on issues such as the European Green Deal, protected areas and irrigation development.
