National bus carrier Volánbusz has taken delivery of its first electric bus, a model by Chinese manufacturer BYD made in Hungary.

The bus will travel a route across the Slovak border at Komárom, while its factory is located in the same area. Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó said at the inaugural event that BYD intended to play a key role in Komárom as a European production base. “BYD produces environmentally friendly buses … and is fulfilling a key role in efforts to once again put Hungary in a prime position in European bus production befitting its glories of the past,” he said. BYD’s activities in Hungary were, he added, a testament to the success of Hungary’s policy of opening up to the East.

The minister noted that an agreement on the mutual recognition of vaccination certificates by Hungary and Slovakia means that protected citizens of the two countries can travel freely between the countries. Szijjártó said “Hungarians and Slovaks have proven over the past decade that it is far better to cooperate than not.”

The electric bus worth 153.5 million forints (EUR 573,000) was built at the BYD Electric Bus and Truck Hungary plant. Also, bus stops and terminals in both Komárom and Komárno will be upgraded with information panels providing passengers with up-to-date information.
