The opposition Democratic Coalition (DK) is re-submitting an amendment proposal to postpone the parliamentary election of Hungary’s president until after the general election in the spring of 2022, the party said on Thursday.

DK lawmaker Gyula Molnár told an online press conference the proposal would prolong János Áder’s five-year tenure by a few weeks belong its end on May 10 to give the newly elected parliament an opportunity to vote on the president. The current date for the presidential election would give “Prime Minister Viktor Orbán the opportunity to cement a party soldier in the highest public office in the country for five years, weeks before Hungarians pass judgement on him and his regime at the general election,” Molnár said.
