On the occasion of the World Day of the Elderly, the City Social Service of the City of Debrecen handed over a “Beautiful Memory” park in the courtyard of the home for the elderly on Pallagi út on October 1, 2021.
In 2020, the city government submitted an application for the Elderly-Friendly Municipality Award. The cash prize of HUF 1.5 million with the prize won, in the end, created an opportunity to create the “Beautiful Memory” park. As a therapeutic environment, the park provides a special space for people with dementia to maintain their condition, skills and develop their senses. It helps to recall past memories – with fragrant plants, a mailbox, a bus stop sign – for example, and to activate motor skills – for example with a telephone – suitable for a relaxing walk or community activities.
Magyar Posta Zrt. , the Agóra Közhasznú Nonprofit Kft. the staff of the Debrecen Institutional Operation Center, the City Social Service, and the staff of the mayor’s office’s institutional supervision and green space department participated in the planning and construction works, who contributed to the beautification of the park through voluntary activities.
As part of the event organized in connection with the World Day of the Elderly and the handover of the “Beautiful Memory” park, Diána Széles, Deputy Mayor of Debrecen, thanked, among other things, the very good co-operation between the residents and the City Social Service staff during the epidemic. As a result, it is now possible to celebrate World Day for the Elderly together. October is the month of the elderly. As pointed out by Diána Széles, the staff of the Debrecen Institute for Primary Care and Health Development (Daefi) will carry out a voluntary individual health risk assessment (such as blood pressure and blood sugar and cholesterol levels) during the month at the City Social Service among those living and working in its units. Among other things, this survey serves the purpose of obtaining a picture of the current state of health of carers and workers in the unfortunately still epidemic period. The deputy mayor also indicated that the already very successful “Beautiful Memory” park will be expanded with additional elements in the future.
