British Citizens Living in Hungary Have Only One Month Left to Submit Their Application for Settlement

National

British citizens who have already lived in Hungary before 1st January 2021 must apply for a residence permit by 31st December 2021, including those who have a residence or establishment permit issued before Hungary’s accession to the EU (2004) or who have a Hungarian residence permit,or married to a citizen, unless they are themselves Hungarian citizens (dual citizens).

All old documents previously issued to British citizens are valid until 31st December 2021, so those who do not apply for new documents by this date will lose their acquired rights in Hungary, and from January 2022 only the normal, more comprehensive and complicated immigration procedure will be completed so they can make their stay in Hungary legal. 1,200 British citizens have already submitted their applications, but there are many who have yet to do so by the deadline. Citizens of the United Kingdom living in Hungary can find out more on the UK Government’s official website under ‘Living in Hungary’ and get detailed instructions on what to do next: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/living-in-hungary

As the deadline for British citizens living in Hungary to apply for establishment expires at the end of this month, the British Embassy in Budapest is encouraging British citizens who have not yet done so to start work immediately.

Paul Fox, UK Ambassador to Hungary, said:

“There is only one month left until the deadline, so there is an urgent need to ensure that they all apply for a residence permit, as this is the only way to retain their rights previously acquired in Hungary. I ask everyone who has British friends, neighbors or family members who arrived in Hungary before 1st January 2021 to ask if they have already applied for a residence permit and, if not, encourage them to start now. administration. ” The UK ambassadors to a number of EU countries where the deadline is about to expire have published a video in the social media urging British citizens living there to take immediate action: https://youtu.be/c40HO3eRx3M

Since the Brexit referendum, the British Embassy in Budapest has sought to encourage British citizens to apply for establishment in a number of ways, including through face-to-face meetings and roundtables, as well as through social media advertisements and videos. This complements the media campaign launched by the UK government to raise awareness of the measures needed for British citizens living in Europe.
