The Debrecen District Court announced its verdict at a trial on February 21 in the case of four juvenile defendants who were singled out on the streets in Debrecen and then robbed. The group of young people started following the 76-year-old woman from Water Tower Street, and then a member of the company, a 17-year-old boy, pushed her away and took her bag from her. The woman fell and suffered serious injuries. After the crime, all four young people ran away from the scene. Detectives arrested them that day.
The trial court found the defendants guilty of robbery and grievous bodily harm to a person with limited ability to remedy the crime due to his or her old age, which was committed by the second, third, and fourth-degree defendants as accomplices.
The court ordered 3 years and 3 months for the 18-year-old first-degree defendant, 3 years for the 15-year-old second-degree defendant, 2 years and 6 months for the 16-year-old third-degree defendant, and 2 years and 2 months for the 14-year-old fourth-degree defendant.
The four defendants knew each other well, and after their upbringing, they were placed in an apartment house in Debrecen, of which the 18-year-old first- and 16-year-old third-degree defendants were brothers. On the morning of May 14, 2021, the young people stayed in the Fényes udvar in Debrecen. The three boys and the girl had no money, so they decided to get it through crime. At the initiative of the first- and second-degree defendants, it was decided that they would steal cash from an elderly man. Their plan was for the 18-year-old boy to tear the bag out of the victim’s hand while his friends watched him up close.
Their plan was followed shortly by deeds, and on Water Tower Street the defendants saw an elderly woman walking home with her shopping bags in her hands. The defendants began to follow the 76-year-old woman, followed immediately by the first- and second-degree defendants, while their peers were a few feet behind to make it not notice what they were up to. In Mata János Street, the first-degree defendant finally stepped behind the victim and pushed her with both hands and a lot of force.
The old woman fell face down on the roadway, at which point, to encourage his companions, the 18-year-old boy tore out one of the shopping bags held in the victim’s hand. When the defendant obtained the shopping bag, his companions went to him, then left the bleeding victim on the roadway and fled the scene. Defendants searched the bag nearby, finding chicken, vegetables, fruit, and other food in it, but no money. Some of the food was eaten by the young people and the rest was thrown away along with the bag. During the attack, the 76-year-old victim suffered serious injuries that healed in more than eight days.
Following the report of the incident, the police mobilized large forces to identify the attackers, which also led to results that afternoon, and the Debrecen District Court ordered their arrest on 17 May 2021.

Judge Dr. Emri Kinga assessed the proliferation of violent crimes against property, the commission of a social offense, and the fact that the robbery was committed in a way that was aggravating in justifying the verdict. At the same time, he considered the passage of time as a mitigating circumstance, the fact that the defendants’ characterization in correctional facilities was positive, they regretted and regretted their crime, they acknowledged the crime, and in the case of the fourth-degree defendant, they had a mild intellectual disability.
The court’s judgment is final.
