The fifth wave of the coronavirus has certainly entered a descending branch, the national chief medical officer said on the current channel of the M1 on Friday morning.
According to Cecília Müller, Hungary reached the peak of the fifth wave in the fourth week, and since then the epidemiological data have been continuously improving.
She added that the rate of improvement is increasing and is progressing at a pretty good pace: the number of new infections, the number of people in the hospital or on a ventilator is declining and samples from wastewater are also encouraging.
She also said that in Hungary the omicron variant of the coronavirus is the most present (99 percent), but the delta variant is also present.
At the same time, another variant of omicron has already appeared in Hungary, which is responsible for 12 percent of the positive samples, she added.
The subvariants of omicron have similar characteristics, so the symptoms they cause are similar, the chief medical officer said.
Cecília Müller, emphasizing the importance of revaccinations, noted that after the fourth month after vaccination, the effectiveness of all vaccines is declining, so it would be very important for as many people as possible to take the third vaccine.
She also mentioned that the elderly or chronic patients should consider taking the flu vaccine, as the virus is also causing more and more illnesses.
