A record amount of donations was collected at the Ice Hall of the University of Debrecen’s Sports Science Coordination Institute on Tuesday night.
The donation has been offered with the help of the Hungarian Red Cross to help children and their families affected by the war in Ukraine.
Those wishing to play sports and offer donations were welcome at the Ice Hall in Debrecen on Tuesday evening, this time they did not have to buy a ticket, but offer a package of durable food, a hygienic product, a towel or a diaper and baby food. In addition to the Ice Hall, the organizers also collected donations at two other venues, the university foosball and poker competitions, and the women’s day aerobics event. The sporting charity evening was attended by about 1,000 university students, and a large number of foreign students, including those from South Korea, Jordan, Egypt and Kazakhstan, joined the initiative.
The donation was received by András Ujvárosy, Director of the Hajdú-Bihar County Organization of the Hungarian Red Cross, who thanked the University of Debrecen. The Red Cross will deliver some of the students’ donations to Hajdúhadház on Thursday, where families, 17 children and 11 adults fleeing Ukraine have been accommodated.
The county leader of the Red Cross also pointed out that they will soon reach the end of their capacity, so they are expecting young English-speaking and active students of the University of Debrecen who want to help.
