The outgoing President of the Republic, János Áder, did not make a decision on the pardon application of Margit Veres, who was legally sentenced to prison for 5 years in 2018 due to corruption.

Since then, she has founded the former city management company and is taking over the non-refundable agricultural subsidies of the European Union one after the other – writes 24.hu.

Margit Veres, the former mayor of Balmazújváros, has received more than HUF 8.5 million in non-refundable EU support since she was sentenced to 5 years in prison in 2018 for accepting a bribe. According to the Hungarian State Treasury, the former mayor is a farmer and has received area-based subsidies and applied for and received EU funds for the cultivation and greening of industrial vegetables.

Despite the final court verdict against her, Margit Veres has not been imprisoned for four years because she has filed a pardon petition with the President of the Republic, which she can look forward to. This is possible on the basis of a decision of the Ministry of Justice, as the Ministry may suspend the execution of the sentence. The Ministry’s Fact Sheet on Pardons states:

In the course of the pardon procedure, the Secretary of State may, acting under the authority delegated by the Minister, order the suspension or interruption of the execution of the sentence or correctional education until the decision of the President of the Republic.
