Ferenc Buda, Kossuth Prize-winning poet, writer, and translator, will be the guest of honor at this year’s festive book week in Debrecen, held in the pedestrian zone of Csapó Street between June 9 and 12, the organizers announced at a press conference on Wednesday.

Péter Szirák, the curator of the event, indicated that the second-largest event of the national book week is in Debrecen, which was delayed two years ago and was held in September last year due to the coronavirus epidemic.

At this year’s book festival, readers will be able to meet their favorite poet and writer in person at the signings, as well as Éva Veronika Kalapos, Zoltán Egressy, Ákos Herczeg, Endre Bakó, Judit Szeles, Lídia Nádori and Gábor Gyukics. – the curator listed, noting that the name of Ágnes Nemes-Nagy appears several times in the programs, and her poems will be performed in the Reading Park.

Péter Szirák emphasized that the guest of honor at this year’s festive book week in Debrecen was Ferenc Buda, who always adhered to his hometown, Debrecen, its spaces, and spirituality. He grew up in Bem Square, he went to school on Eötvös Street, and he grew up in the very corner of the city. The first straightener of his poetic career was the legendary poet Tamás Kiss from Debrecen, with his help he made his debut as a high school student in the 1955/2 1-2 issue of the literary magazine Alföld.

He added that the young poet had been sentenced to one year in prison for his revolutionary poems and could not continue his university studies after his release. In search of a job, a livelihood, and a publication opportunity, he moved to Budapest, where he was mentored by László Nagy and Ferenc Juhász. His first book of poems, The Example of Grasses, was published in 1963, and his collections in 1992 and 2006. He published his memoir entitled World, my world in 2011, in which he commemorates the years in Debrecen in detail – explained Péter Szirák.
