From September 8 to 11, ALL-IN Debrecen is participating in Jewish Cultural Days. Concerts, sightseeing walks, a kosher food court and a street festival await visitors during the four days.
Kaddis est – Contemporary world music
On the evening of September 8, a contemporary world music concert marked by the names of Sándor Födő Artisjus and multiple Phonogram award-winning composer and Phonogram and eMeRTon award-winning singer Eszter Bíró will begin in the Pásti Street Orthodox Synagogue.
The large-scale piece of music performed with the participation of 12 musicians is based on one of the main pillars of the Jewish liturgy. The Kaddish is an age-old prayer, for the first time in the world and in a unique way, the composer used the entire text in Aramaic in his work.
Debrecen Jewish Street Festival and Gastropub
The biggest attraction of the series of events awaits those interested in Jewish culture and gastronomy on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. in Pásti Street: the organizers are preparing music and dance programs, poetry recitals, informative and local history presentations. It will be possible to visit the synagogue and the rabbi’s room, and the audience can also talk informally with Rabbi Shmuel Faigen.
During the day, Jewish culinary traditions will be presented, brought by the Mazel Tov Restaurant and the recently opened Hamsza Restaurant. In addition, Jewish baked goods and other dishes can be tasted, while the participants also gain an insight into kitchen habits and procedures.
In pursuit of Jewish heritage
Those interested can take part in a guided walk in English on Friday and Hungarian on Sunday with the cooperation of Explore Debrecen, during which they can learn about Debrecen’s Jewish-built and spiritual-cultural values.
The city keeps dancing!
On Friday evenings, the Debrecen Népi Együttes will perform Hasidic dances in various parts of the city center: this genre of dance is used to express joy and other communal emotions in Jewish culture.
Barhesz Party – kosher gastronomic experiences
Barhesz, hummus, kosher beer, wine and pálinka… in the courtyard of the Pásti Street Orthodox Synagogue, visitors can have a real culinary experience, as they can taste traditional kosher, Jewish and Israeli food and drinks. The taste experiences are enriched by musical programs: well-known Hebrew melodies will be heard, and some exciting Hasidic stories will also be told.
Detailed programs are available on the event’s Facebook page.
