The University of Debrecen celebrated the start of the academic year with a full house on Wednesday at the Nagyerdei Stadium. On yoUDay artists from the Könnyůzeni Intézet and foreign students playing in the oDEon international troupe performed alongside domestic stars. About 20,000 people partied at this year’s, now sixth, stadium show at the opening of the academic year of UD.
This university is the best, let this be your day, have fun, gain experiences, and make friends! Love each other, live, learn
– these were the words of György Kossa, the chairman of the board of trustees of the István Gróf Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen (GTIDEA), who greeted the students of the University of Debrecen and the guests of YoUDay in the Nagyerdei Stadium on Wednesday.
György Kossa said that the importance of the extraordinary stadium show goes beyond community building. The foreign students participating and performing at the event, as well as the visit of GTIDEA’s Scientific and Social Advisory Board, also give the institution international recognition.
May we have faith, may the strength be with us, may there be peace, may there be love and may the cycle of life prevail
– said Zoltán Bács in his greeting.
The chancellor of the University of Debrecen showed off his singing skills at YoUDay after performing on the stage of the UD university theater, oDEon. He turned the appreciative audience to the party with a short excerpt of the Beatles’ Let it be.
Student and community life has finally returned to the university. University campuses are full of life again, queues are snaking at the university restaurants again, we are again organizing full-house parties typical of the pre-pandemic period, and now we can also display the full board at the gates of YoUDay. It’s a pleasure to see this again
– stated István Csont, president of the Student Self-Government, in his welcoming speech.
According to Lajos Barca, deputy mayor of Debrecen, YoUDay is a celebration of the community.
The University of Debrecen is a place where it is not only good to study and play sports. During their university years, UD students can enrich themselves with life-long experiences. And events like YoUDay contribute to the fact that even more young people decide to stay in our city for good and join our community
– stressed Lajos Barcsa.
In accordance with the traditions of the University of Debrecen, the extraordinary opening of the academic year began again this year with the flag marching of the institution’s foreign student community. The organizers paraded twice as many flags as last year, a total of 110 flags at the start of the show.
On the larger-than-ever stage set up in the arena of the Nagyerdei Stadium, the actors of the Hungarian light music scene followed each other. The first performers of the more than two-hour show were the artists of the Institute of Light Music of the University of Debrecen and members of the troupe of foreign students of the oDEon university theater. They were followed by Szikora Jennifer and then Carson Coma. György Korda and Klári Balázs were guests of the unique stadium show, even if it was virtual, and their iconic song, Reptér, was played. Afterward, Gigi Radics and Charlie Horváth appeared in front of the public, accompanied by the Abrakazbra band, followed by Azahriah’s concert. The football players of Loki and the cheerleaders of DEAC also took the stage at the grandiose opening stadium show. The hosts of this year’s YoUDay were two employees of Campus Rádió in Debrecen, Árpád Burai and Betti Gábor. The extraordinary opening of the school year ended with a frenzied laser show, after which the stadium disco began.
As expected, YoUDay 2022 turned out to be a stadium show. With more interest than ever before, on the biggest stage, with the most performers and the longest show, it became the most anticipated and one of the most successful university events of the year.
