Police

The public prosecution on Monday filed charges against Pál Völner, a former justice ministry state secretary, who is suspected of accepting bribes from the former head of the Hungarian Chamber of Bailiffs, György Schadl.

Prosecutors allege that Schadl regularly bribed Völner until July 2021 and used his influence to secure the appointment of seven bailiffs in exchange for kickbacks. Charges have been filed against a total of 22 offenders in the case. Prosecutors have proposed that Völner receive an eight-year prison term and a 25 million forint fine, while it is seeking a ten-year prison sentence and 200 million fine for Schadl. Völner resigned in late 2021 after being suspected of accepting bribes totalling 83 million forints (EUR 200,000).
