Their joint study of the role of melatonin in natural hormone development was published by the researchers of the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Science and Environmental Management Agrarian Genomics and Biotechnology Center of the University of Debrecen and the Institute of Food Technology in the special issue of the international journal Frontiers in Plant Science entitled Woman in Plant Science 2022. Their studies proved that melatonin regulates the development of plants and their responses to various environmental stresses.
Melatonin is involved in the regulation of most physiological processes in humans and animals. However, the research of the last two decades have highlighted that the synthesis of melatonin also takes place in plants, and can play an important regulatory role in the germination of seeds, the growth of roots and shoots, the delay of aging, and the protection of environmental abiotic stresses.
The research was partially carried out within the framework of the TKP2021-EGA-20 (Biotechnology) project with the support of the National Research Development and Innovation Fund.
