The sports world will pay attention to the University of Debrecen three times next year, as one of the country’s most popular higher education institutions will be the venue for major international events.
In 2023, the University of Debrecen will host the 3×3 European University Basketball Championship and the Frisbee (officially flying disc) World Trophy. And for football lovers, it is gratifying that the U17 European Football Championship will take place in Hungary in the spring, and one of the venues for the matches will be the DEAC Sports Center.
These events will also be a precursor to the 2024 European University Games organized in Debrecen and Miskolc.
Through our athletes, sports science training, and research, we have been part of international blood circulation until now, but now we have a big role to play from the director’s side as well. We will host university students from all over the world, who we can introduce to the University of Debrecen, the city, and who may even return to us later through various international programs. Preparations have been underway since 2019, and the requirements of international associations regarding facilities, accommodation, volunteers, and additional programs must be met. We are in constant contact with the Hungarian and international football, basketball, and volleyball federations to ensure that the arrangement goes as smoothly as possible. Both DEAC and the Debrecen Sports Center support us in this
– said László Balogh, director of the Sports Science Coordination Institute of the University of Debrecen.
The promotion of next year’s Frisbee World Trophy is also well underway. On October 28, Friday, for example, the DEAC athletes held a flashmob in Debrecen’s main square. Almost five hundred students from several local primary and secondary schools took part in the event, but passers-by, young and old, young and old, also grabbed a puck.
The ambassador of the Frisbee World Trophy, Attila Mizsér, the Olympic pentathlon champion, was also present at the flashmob, they drew attention to the fact that, based on his experience as an elite athlete and sports organizer, it is extremely important that such large-scale events rely on the strength of local communities.
This is the aim of the Sport-Life Balance program, which offers connection points and opportunities for cooperation between the corporate and sports sectors. Building on this program, in the coming months we will try to involve several local businesses in the implementation of the prestigious competition
– added Attila Mizsér.
Árpád Rácz, the head of DEAC’s frisbee section, assessed that the movement achieved its goal and that the news of next year’s sports event was spread to many people.
It was encouraging to see how actively the students and teachers of Debrecen schools supported the initiative. Of course, this is only the beginning, as we are planning several similar movements until the start of the World Cup
– emphasized Árpád Rácz.
