The Debrecen Traffic Prosecutor’s Office brought charges against the elderly man who hit the pedestrian at the zebra crossing for the offense of negligently causing a fatal road accident.
According to the indictment, on December 11, 2021, around 6:30 p.m., the elderly man was driving his car alone in the interior of Nádudvar at a much higher speed than the legal limit.
The pedestrian crossing that crosses the road is situated directly in front of an educational institution, so the zebra was not only indicated by the warning sign from both directions, but also by a flashing yellow traffic sign that drew attention to the fact that children should be expected to cross that section of the road on a regular basis.
The defendant ignored the zebra crossing and warning signs and did not even notice that a car stopped in front of him, in the other traffic lane, to allow the family of four there to cross. The defendant only noticed the people crossing the zebra crossing late, so he ran over two people without braking.
One of the victims suffered such serious, life-threatening injuries that he died on the spot, while the minor suffered a femur fracture that took more than 8 days to heal.
The accident occurred as a result of the defendant’s serious violation of the KRESZ rules and the victim’s death.
The investigation of the case was conducted by the Hajdúszoboszló Police Department.
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Debrecen filed charges against the defendant at the District Court in Hajdúszoboszló for the offense of negligently causing a fatal road accident.
In the indictment, the district prosecutor’s office proposed that the district court sentence the defendant to prison and permanently ban him from driving road vehicles.
