On February 18, the Földközelben exhibition will open in Modem, where visitors will be treated to a guided tour by the curator and a concert by the horn player Endre Kertész.
The painters of the fourth volume of the book series presenting the private collection in Debrecen are united by a deep commitment to landscape painting. Most of them are classified under the heading of “lowland painting” in Hungarian art historiography, because the main theme of their art was the Great Plain, capturing the wilderness experience.
In addition to the landscapes, the exhibition pays special attention to those portraits and depictions of people that depict the typical figures of Hungarian society. An independent section presents the shocking works of war painters working during the First World War (László Mednyánszky, István Nagy) based on real experiences. Alongside the painters, one of the great sculptors of the era, Ferenc Medgyessy, appears, whose works fit well with the spirit represented by the other artists.
This part of the collection also contains many special pieces, which can rightly be called works of museum value. It would take a long time to list the most beautiful pieces, but some are still worth mentioning: Mednyánszky’s vagabond pictures, Koszta’s field workers, Fényes’ recently returned home from abroad, the Tisza landscape, Iványi’s gypsy town in Kecskemét, Tornyai’s paintings of Hódmezővásárhely, his troubles, Endre’s depictions of the Great Plain landscape, Glatz’s figure of a sower, István Nagy’s soldier pictures, Rudnay’s peasant couple, Holló’s still lifes and the wooden version of Medgyessy’s famous scrubbing woman.
