Artyom Vaszjunyin became the head coach of the DEAC ice hockey team in the Erste Liga. According to Wednesday’s news report on the website of the Debrecen club, the assistant of the 39-year-old Hungarian coach will be Ákos Berta.
As a player, Vaszjunyin strengthened the teams of Alba Volán, Ferencváros, Dunaújváros and Debrecen, won the Hungarian championship seven times, and appeared in the national team nearly eighty times. He was also a member of the team in Sapporo, where in 2008 the national team reached the elite field. After his retirement, he was active in the youth team at Székesfehérvár, winning two championships with the U21 team.
Vaszjunyin told MTI that he considers it fair if he does not comment on his work in Debrecen yet, since his contract officially only runs from July, and until then he has work to do with the Fehérvár U21 team. Ákos Berta – who retired from DEAC as team captain last year and has been part of the club since then – pointed out that there will certainly be people leaving, and there will also be people coming.
“We would like to learn from previous mistakes, when the squad was not wide enough, and if the team was hit by a wave of injuries or illness, it would be good if we could stand with two and a half lines instead of four. We try to form the team in such a way that there is competition in every position, competition for the opportunity to play, and it is also fundamental that the players do everything on the field to achieve a better result. Artyom comes from the junior league, the club also counts on his work of this kind, so that we can integrate as many young people as possible into the senior team, or bring them close to it. The coaching staff officially starts work from July, until then the main task is to create the framework” Berta told MTI.
DEAC, which did not reach the quarterfinals in the league, announced at the end of February that it would not extend the expiring contract of head coach József György.
