University professor István Juhász received the Pro Urbe award on Tuesday at the festive assembly organized on the occasion of City Day. With the award, the professor’s significant activity spanning several decades was recognized.
On April 11, 1693, Debrecen received the status of free royal city from Emperor and King Lipót I. On this occasion, the city assembly awards honorary titles on this day every year. The honorary citizen titles, the Pro Urbe, Mecénás and Frigyes Déri awards were presented at Tuesday’s ceremonial meeting.
At the event held at the Kölcsey Center, István Juhász, a professor at the University of Debrecen, received the Pro Urbe award in recognition of his decades-long, well-respected activities that have increased the development and reputation of the city and benefited the local community.
István Juhász graduated cum laude as a general practitioner in 1981. As a university student, he was a member of the Hajdú-Bihar county management of the Hungarian Red Cross and the manager of the DOTE Student Foundation for two terms. As a young doctor, he was an active member of the management of the Debrecen City Red Cross, and for years he participated in the organization of blood donations and first aid training. Later, he gave educational lectures on various professional topics – dermatology, oncology and burns. For decades, he has been teaching medical and dental students in surgery and dermatology in both Hungarian and English. He also participates in the education of residents and postgraduate skin surgery training of specialists. In 1994, he became a candidate, then a PhD, his scientific work concerns wound healing and dermatological oncology. Founding member of the Doctoral School of Multidisciplinary Research at the University of Debrecen.
He was one of the founders of the Hungarian Wound Care Society, the president of the Hungarian Burn Association and the general secretary of the Hungarian Dermatology Association, and for eight years he was the general secretary of the European Burn Association. His work was recognized with the Széchenyi Professorial Scholarship and the Mór Kaposi Memorial Medal of the Hungarian Dermatology Association, and he is also an honorary doctor of the Czech Purkinje Medical Society.
In addition to István Juhász, the activities of Géza György and Lajos Püski were recognized with the Pro Urbe award. The City of Debrecen awarded the honorary title of Honorary Citizen to Éva Fahidi and Fülöp Kocsis. This year, the Déri Frigyes Award went to Péter Szabó and Gyula Szűcs, and the Patron Award went to Emil Harangi, Sándor Harangi and Zoltán Katona.
