The popularity of the German language remains unbroken in Hungary, German is still the second most popular foreign language. German, Austrian and Swiss companies create jobs for around 330,000 people, and 80 university courses are taught in German. Debrecen is represented with excellent programs this year as well.
Economic relations, professional advancement, opportunities for further education, interest in German-speaking culture, Swabian roots – there are many reasons why someone chooses the German language.
To strengthen this, the German, Austrian and Swiss embassies, the Goethe Institute, the Austrian Cultural Forum and the Austrian Institute joined together and will organize the Wunderbar festival, the week of the German language, from April 17. Those interested in culture, science, cinema and gastronomy are waiting for nearly 200 programs across the country.
Hungary’s most important trade partner is Germany, followed by Austria. In addition to the workplace, German is also popular in schools: 300,000 Hungarian students study German in nearly 2,700 schools, and even more surprisingly, German can be studied in 80 majors at 18 Hungarian universities. Budapest is home to the only fully German-language higher education institution outside the German-speaking area, Andrássy University.
Debrecen is connected to the festival in many ways: the Csokonai Vitéz Mihály High School organizes a German-language history and geography class for young people, the Institute of German Studies of the University of Debrecen prepares an Austria quiz, while the German Cultural Forum welcomes those who know German, but do not yet, with a Career Day. what to do with it.
DSZC András Mechwart Mechanical and Information Technology Technikum Hajdú-Bihar County organizes a two-round country knowledge team competition on the topic of the gastronomy of German-speaking countries. In the second round of the competition, the teams also prepare typical German/Austrian/Swiss dishes, which are evaluated by a jury.
