The General Prosecutor’s Office of Debrecen proposed upholding the 6-year prison sentence imposed on the man who attacked his wife with a knife.

The Miskolc District Court sentenced the perpetrator to 6 years in prison and 6 years of disqualification from public affairs for attempted premeditated murder, with the exception of parole.

At the time of the crime, the defendant and his wife had been living together for 36 years. As a result of his illnesses, the defendant, who is basically jealous, became unable to work and needed the care of his wife. As his health worsened, the man’s jealousy grew stronger and then took over him. He believed that his wife was cheating on him, which he voiced several times, and because of this, he regularly quarreled with her. He finally decided to kill his wife, so he hid a 14.5 cm kitchen knife under his pillow the night before the crime.

On the morning of February 25, 2022, they were lying in bed when the accused began to beg his wife, who was lying with her back to him, to turn towards him. After several requests, the wife turned, at which point the man suddenly stabbed the front of her neck with the knife and then started stabbing his wife, who was trying to defend herself, with the knife. The woman finally managed to escape from the room and fled to her daughter living in the back part of the house, from where help was called.

The husband tried to commit suicide, but failed. His wife suffered serious injuries that took more than eight days to heal.

According to the position of the Debrecen Appeals General Prosecutor’s Office, both the classification of the crime and the imposed penalty are legal.

The defendant unreasonably attacked his wife with a knife, who can only owe her life to the fact that her husband stabbed her with his weaker, clumsier hand. According to the judgment of the General Prosecutor’s Office of Appeal, no form of domestic violence is acceptable, and the trial court imposed a sentence commensurate with the crime, which there is no legal reason to reduce.

Defense appeals are judged by the Debrecen Court of Appeals, which acts at the second level.
