A middle-aged man drowned in Lake Balaton on Sunday evening in Szigliget, making him the first victim of the summer season, the spokesperson of the Somogy County Police Headquarters announced to MTI on Monday.
Zsolt Iván Batta said that the man disappeared in the water around six o’clock in the evening after he went to help a woman who had drifted away on her mattress due to the strong wind.
The circumstances of the death are being investigated within an administrative procedure, he added.
According to MTI’s information, the woman who drifted away was the wife of the victim from Ajka, who fortunately reached the shore safely.
László Horváth, head of the Balaton Water Police Department, told MTI that there had already been two deaths in Lake Balaton during the winter-spring period this year, but neither was a “classic drowning.” One was related to a sudden illness in old age, and the other to suicide, he added.
