A student from the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Debrecen has been recognized among the best at the CASA 15 international architecture student competition. Kornél Horváth was awarded for his design proposal for developing a vacant plot on Szepességi Street in Debrecen.
The CASA 15 international student competition was launched in March at the University of Debrecen’s Faculty of Engineering. The contest attracted nearly 200 second-year architecture students and 40-50 teachers from institutions in Hungary, Romania, and Serbia (Debrecen, Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Timișoara, Sibiu, and Novi Sad). The host department, Faculty of Engineering’s Department of Architecture, was represented by sixty participants.
Students were tasked with designing a small-scale residential building with community functions for an empty plot at 10 Szepességi Street in downtown Debrecen. The design also needed to accommodate a fictional civil organization. The site is interesting as it is adjacent to buildings that reflect the traditional civic architecture of the area
– explained the head of the Department of Architecture.
Tamás Szentirmai added that to ensure the students fully understood the task and could draw inspiration, a visit to the site was organized.
The CASA 15 competition was first announced by Romanian architecture schools in 2009, challenging second-year students to design a new residential building for a vacant plot in Bucharest. The event has been held annually ever since.
This year’s competition attracted 146 entries, from which an international jury of three selected 20 commendable projects. One of these was by Kornél Horváth, an architecture student at the Faculty of Engineering in Debrecen. The award ceremony was held in Debrecen at the recently opened Drying Workshop on Szombathi István Street.
The awarded student explained that the task was complex and required substantial work, which he carried out throughout the fourth semester. His project was supported by his two teachers, László Tarcsi and Dóra Szuszik.
Moments like these make me love studying architecture. After a long, challenging semester, being able to produce work I can look back on with pride is incredibly rewarding. It’s a great honor to have my design recognized among the best in such a strong international field, especially considering that all other awarded projects were created by student pairs
