The Hospice-Palliative Care Unit of the University of Debrecen Clinical Center will soon operate in a new, more spacious, and comfortable environment. While the unit remains on the Nagyerdei Campus, it will move to another wing of the Pulmonology Clinic building.

Established in 2017, the Hospice-Palliative Care Unit provides end-of-life care for patients with advanced malignant tumors. Since 2023, the unit has been housed in the Pulmonology Clinic and will continue there in an upgraded section. The new location, accessible from the left side of the building, offers a ground-floor entrance and enhanced comfort for patients.

The unit will continue to operate with 20 beds but will now feature smaller rooms with 2-3 beds, each with a private bathroom. This change aims to meet modern healthcare standards and provide dignified end-of-life care. Professor Zoltán Szabó, President of the Clinical Center, emphasized the commitment to maintaining high professional standards and continuously improving care conditions.

During a recent site visit, Árpád Juhász, the unit’s head clinician, highlighted new spacious communal areas and a small courtyard designed to enhance the environment for patients and their visitors.

The unit serves terminal cancer patients who can no longer receive active oncology treatment or whose home care is unmanageable. Its goal is to alleviate physical and emotional suffering, address symptoms and pain, and ensure patients’ dignity and peace. A multidisciplinary team, including doctors, specialized nurses, psychologists, mental health professionals, physiotherapists, chaplains, dietitians, social workers, and trained volunteers, provides comprehensive care.
