The University of Debrecen maintains stable financial management, with continuous growth in its balance sheet total, equity, investment expenditures, and student numbers year after year.

The institution serves as a key partner and knowledge hub for businesses and institutions operating in the region. This was highlighted at the University of Debrecen’s 2025 Economic Kickoff Partner Meeting, where representatives of organizations and companies collaborating with the university were hosted on Friday.

In an unconventional approach, the University of Debrecen’s Chancellor, Zoltán Bács, utilized artificial intelligence to help prepare his report for this year’s Economic Kickoff Partner Meeting. His presentation revealed that as of the October summary, the university has 32,351 students, including 7,625 international students and 1,300 doctoral candidates. The university’s reach continues to expand, with an increasing number of applicants from distant countries, particularly from China, Dubai, Nigeria, and Romania. The latest admission figures are expected to set a new record, according to the Chancellor.

Financial Stability and Expansion

Bács Zoltán emphasized that the university’s financial management is stable, with steady growth in its balance sheet total, equity, and investment expenditures each year. With nearly 12,800 employees, the University of Debrecen is the largest employer in the region. Special attention is given to the 1,750 lecturers and researchers, whose salaries rank among the highest among Hungarian universities.

– “We have ample capacity and knowledge within our institution. Without universities, knowledge and innovation cannot be built in Hungary. By 2030, we plan to allocate nearly 150 million euros to science and innovation without external funding,” Bács announced.

Among the major events hosted by the university last year, he highlighted the European University Games, the largest sports event in Hungarian history, featuring representatives from 450 universities and 6,000 participants.

Additionally, the University of Debrecen became the first and, so far, the only Hungarian institution to achieve the highest “Platinum” status in the International University Sports Federation’s (FISU) Healthy Campus certification, a recognition held by only 38 higher education institutions worldwide.

His presentation, which included musical elements and striking visuals, also outlined significant upcoming developments in the university’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Park on Vezér Street. These include the completion of the Faculty of Engineering’s Vehicle Laboratory and the establishment of the SZTÁR Innovation Center, which will serve sports, artistic, and social purposes. On the Böszörményi Street campus, plans include a new student dormitory and the construction of Learning Center II, while in Újfehértó, the Szabolcs Apple Center is set to be completed.

Institutional Autonomy and Strategic Growth

György Kossa, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Count István Tisza Foundation for the University of Debrecen, emphasized that gaining its own maintainer has granted the university true autonomy.

  • “It has not just transitioned from a budgetary institution to a different type of public service organization but has become a truly independent entity that can build its future along long-term strategies. This transformation has allowed us to establish stable foundations for financial, organizational, and collaborative development, making the university a strong pillar of society. Thanks to this, it ensures progress in education, science, the arts, research, innovation, healthcare, the economy, and overall quality of life,” Kossa stated.

Over the past four years, the university’s financial position has stabilized and grown to an unprecedented extent.

  • “This growth is not just reflected in numbers but also in strategic decisions and investments that lay the foundation for the institution’s future. The increase in the balance sheet total and the dynamic growth are results of conscious financial management and long-term strategic planning, which have enabled the creation of stable financial foundations. The university has effectively utilized and reinvested its revenues into development projects. This not only signifies financial success but also ensures long-term sustainability and stability,” he emphasized.

He also announced plans to create 600-1,000 new dormitory places, which will serve as a long-term revenue source for the university while providing modern, comfortable living conditions for students.

  • “Our goal is not just to keep pace with the world’s leading universities but to stay ahead of them. Economic stability has strengthened the University of Debrecen’s position not only in Hungary but also internationally. Currently, the university is engaged in over 1,000 international research projects, which not only enhance its scientific reputation but also secure significant financial resources. These numbers do not just speak; they build a future. A future in which the University of Debrecen remains a key player, not just in the region but in the global academic community as well. Our vision is that the University of Debrecen will still be here 500 years from now,” Kossa György emphasized.

The Role of the University in Debrecen’s Growth

László Papp, Mayor of Debrecen, stated that the city is currently one of the fastest-growing cities in Europe. He believes that such rapid development occurs only once in a century. According to him, the traditional industries that made Debrecen great over the past century are still strongly represented in the university’s educational structure.

  • “The University of Debrecen offers the widest range of academic programs in the country. From pop music training to mechatronics engineering, its offerings cover an extensive spectrum. This provides the city with a strong scientific, research, and educational base to support economic strategy development. This is the key to success,” Papp said.

The Popularity of Model-Transition Universities

Annamária Pósánné Rácz, Deputy State Secretary for Higher Education and Adult Education at the Ministry of Culture and Innovation, emphasized that among the 63 higher education institutions in Hungary, the 21 model-transition universities rank among the most popular.

Admission and enrollment statistics indicate that about 70% of applicants choose model-transition institutions. Last year, 120,000 students applied to higher education institutions, with the University of Debrecen accounting for 8.2% of this number, a significant share.

  • “The popularity of model-transition institutions shows a remarkable trend in both Budapest and rural areas. The number of applicants to rural universities has grown much more dynamically, likely due to the increasing economic competitiveness of some regions and the slight decrease in Budapest’s dominance,” Pósánné Rácz stated.

She also noted that more students are choosing part-time higher education programs while working. She praised the University of Debrecen for its success in securing funding and meeting performance-based indicators.

The Future Lies in Cooperation

Zoltán Szilvássy, Rector of the University of Debrecen, highlighted that for nearly 500 years, Debrecen has had a tradition of collaboration between the city, the church, businesses, and the university.

  • “Looking back a few years, we see that Hungary’s economic development primarily involved the establishment of German multinational companies, which created a somewhat monotonous dynamic. Now, following the principle of connectivity, we see German, Chinese, and Hungarian business collaborations here in Debrecen. These three players are entirely different yet rely on each other. The University of Debrecen has found its place in this international collective culture,” Szilvássy explained.

According to him, unity and collaboration will continue to be the key to success in the future.
