A new exciting program is going to be held in Déri Museum on Friday.Date: Friday (23rd of June) 4:00 pm
Venue: Déri Museum, Debrecen (1. Déri square)
Program: Illerup Ådal, the valley of Illerup River, which is not merely a swampy river valley, but perhaps the most famous archeological site of the Roman Iron Age – the period before the Vikings – in Scandinavia. In the now protected area, since the sensational discovery of the 1950s, more than 22,000 artefacts have been discovered.
In 205 BC, a Roman army with Roman set off to raid beyond the northern boundary of the German Province, but the local Iron Age warriors defeated the intruders in a bloody battle. After the battle, the winners collected the weapons and equipment of the defeated Roman soldiers and destroyed them within a monumental ceremony. They also sacrificed their prisoners and plunged them into the swamps offering everything as a sacrificial gift to the god of war and battles.
The animated film, screened in Déri Museum on Friday and produced by the workers of Moesgaard Museum of Aarhus, shows not only the material evidence of the battle, but the visitors will also be presented the strange world of Scandinavian swamp sacrifices.
