Freedom Quilt – Christalena Hughmanick

You are invited to participate in a quilt block making workshop lead by American textile artist and educator Christalena Hughmanick.

Date: Tuesday (4th of June) 5:00 – 8:00 pm

Venue: American Corner Debrecen (19/d Bem square)

Program: Patchwork quilting in America has a long folk art tradition as a platform for storytelling, creative expression and identity building amongst its practioners. A brief lecture will be given about the open source index of patterns that signify the diverse cultures that comprise America, material recycling and reuse.

In addition, instruction for basic sewing, applique and fabric painting skills will be provided to help you can create an individual quilt block based on the prompt “What does freedom mean to you?”

All materials are provided and all skill levels with sewing welcome.

About the project:

In honor of the 30th anniversary of the regime change in Hungary and the formation of the Hungarian Patchwork Guild (HPG) in 1989, US Embassy Budapest invited United States based textile artist, educator and quilt scholar Christalena Hughmanick to realize a country wide project in Hungary.

During the summer, Christalena will travel to the American Corners in Hungary to provide brief informational lectures on the history of US quilting and basic quilt making instruction for participants.

About the artist:

Christalena Hughmanick is an artist working in textiles, sculpture, and performance. She received her Masters In Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2012 where she is currently a Lecturer in the Fiber and Material Studies Department. She is currently on a Fulbright Fellowship for the 2018-19 academic year as a resident Lecturer & Researcher at the Moholy-Nagy Művészeti Egyetem in Budapest, Hungary.
