Due to the coronavirus epidemic, the Berlin International Film Festival (Berlinale) starts on Monday without audiences.
For the first time in the 71-year history of the festival, two Hungarian feature films run for the best film award, the Golden Bear.
Public screenings and awards galas will be held at the Berlinale Summer Special series of events from June 9th to June 20th, if the epidemic situation allows.
15 films compete for the prizes. Among them we can find Forest – I See You Everywhere by Fliegauf Bence and Natural Light by Dénes Nagy. The world premiere of both films will be held at the Berlinale.
An international jury is deciding on the awards. The jury members were selected from among the artists who have been awarded the Golden Bear in recent years. Ildikó Enyedi was also invited to the board, who took home the main prize in 2017 for her film entitled About Body and Soul.
In addition to Cannes and Venice, the Berlinale is the most prominent of the A-category film festivals. Its annual budget is roughly 25 million euros (8 billion forints), its main financier is the German federal government.
