Poet and author Gábor Görgey, minister of cultural heritage between 2002 and 2003, has died aged 92, the Hungarian Academy of Sciences said on Monday.
Born in 1929, Görgey was expelled form university and relocated from his home in Budapest during the Communist dictatorship. He worked as a journalist from the 1960s and as artistic director of Hungarian Television between 1994 and 1997. He headed the Hungarian PEN Club between 2001 and 2010. He was awarded the József Attila Prize in 1980, the Kossuth Prize in 2006 and the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary, Middle Cross with the Star in 2010, among other acknowledgements.
