Coolio, real name Artis Leon Ivey Jr., one of the defining American rappers of the nineties, died at the age of 59.
Coolio’s friend and manager Jarez Posey spoke to CNN about the news of Coolio’s death.
The rapper, born on August 1st, 1963, died in Los Angles, at a friend’s house, on Wednesday afternoon local time. Posey told NBC News that his friend had a heart attack and was found in the bathroom. TMZ cites police sources and reports that no drugs or signs of drug use were found at the scene.
Coolio’s best-known hit is Gangsta’s Paradise, released in 1995, a cover of Stevie Wonder’s song Pastime Paradise, released in 1976, which became known around the world as the theme song for the movie Dangerous Kids. He received a Grammy award in the category of best rap performance, and his music video won two awards at the MTV Video Music Awards. The song was ranked by Billboard as the 85th best song of all time, and is currently in 98th place on the list, which has been updated several times since then.
