Szabolcs Mátyássy, composer, actor, and assistant professor at the University of Theater and Film Arts, was elected the new director of the Csokonai National Theater in Debrecen by the city’s general assembly with a unanimous vote.
The mandate of the current director Péter Gemza expires at the end of June. Three people applied for the position of director, Péter Gemza did not submit an application.
Prior to the general meeting’s decision, the professional committee evaluating the applications clearly supported the application of Szabolcs Mátyássy, who was elected directly by the general meeting with a mandate until January 31, 2028. In the new director’s application, director István K. Szabó was nominated as the theater’s new artistic director.
At the general assembly, Mayor László Papp (Fidesz-KDNP) thanked Péter Gemza for his work so far as artistic director and then theater director.
Zoltán Mátyássy Szabolcs graduated from the Liszt Ferenc University of Music in 2014 with a degree in applied composition (BA), and in 2016 with a degree in composition (MA). In 2021, he received a DLA degree at the University of Theater and Film, and in the same year he received a qualification in art administration and art management.
He was a member of the company at the Szeged National Theater from 1997 to 2003, and then from 2006 to 2007 as an actor in the prose department. Szabolcs Mátyássy is an assistant professor at the University of Theater and Film Arts, a member of the public body of the Hungarian Academy of Arts, and a member of the Hungarian Composers’ Association.
