Cinematographer Elemér Ragályi has died at the age of 83 – Telex quotes the statement of the family. According to the information, Elemér Ragályi died on Thursday after a short illness that was borne with dignity.

The cinematographer was born in Rákosliget, his father wanted him to become a lawyer, but he applied to be an actor and cinematographer after graduation. After failing his entrance exam, from 1957 he worked as a lighting engineer, laboratory technician, assistant cameraman and recording manager at the Mafilm studio. In 1968, he finally graduated from the Academy of Theater and Film with a degree in cinematography. After that, he entered feature film production as one of the most significant members of a marked generational shift in cinema. In the wake of the European new waves, Hungarian film found a more direct and natural voice at this time. He worked in such influential films as Old-Time Football, Marci the Cuckoo, Bástyasétány 74, The Wind Whistles Under Their Feet, Save the Evil One, Ripacsok, Dögkeselyű, Miss Arizona, Csók, anyu!

In 1991, he also shared the success of the Oscar for the best foreign language film The Road of Hope, made with the Swiss director Xavier Koller. He was also the cinematographer for the Emmy Award-winning film Rasputin in 1996. He was awarded the Kossuth and Béla Balázs awards.
